Mac Mini For Server

Mac mini features the Apple T2 Security Chip — second-generation custom Mac silicon designed by Apple to make Mac mini even more secure. The T2 Security Chip consolidates several controllers into one, and includes a Secure Enclave coprocessor that provides the foundation for encrypted storage and secure boot capabilities. A Mac Mini is less expensive initially, but it does require an external monitor and keyboard for full functionality. An iMac is also a good option and the monitor is built-in. Some folks (like me) even use a MacPro desktop machine for audio duties. Nowadays, the Macs I see most often used for audio are the Mac Mini or a Mac portable.

One of the benefits of a remote Mac mini is that it’s always on. This means your server can work for you while your iPhone or laptop is put away. A lot of people will use this always-on benefit to improve their file sharing for home or business.

Dropbox is a great way to make this happen. It’s powerful, is available on all sorts of platforms, and is widely known. However, if preference or policy requires that your data stays on your hardware, you do have another option.

Resilio Sync is a power application that lets you run your own file syncing server. It has many of the powerful features found in Dropbox, but it runs on your own hardware. It’s based on the powerful BitTorrent technology so it’s very fast and very secure.

Why put it on a server of your own?

There are a few reasons you might consider putting your main stash of files on a remote server:

First, If you were to lose your home computer and phone because of fire, theft or natural disaster, you’d still have all of your files safely in a data center in a remote location.

Second, with the Resilio Pro upgrade, you can use Selective Sync. This means your Mac mini server could have a copy of all of your files while your laptop or mobile device just keeps a copy of needed documents. This would save you space on hardware where it is more limited. With a Mac mini server, you're only limited by the amount of space on the hardware.

Last, if you’re on the road and need a copy of your files, Sync will determine the fastest way to get those delivered to you. If that resource is your home Mac, it might take some time to delivery a large file. However, if you’re downloading from a Mac mini server in one of our data centers, you’ll have access to gigabit speeds and quick paths to wherever you are in the world.

For an added tip, check out Hazel on the Mac. It’s a powerful tool that will watch for triggers (i.e., new files or files with a certain name) and Hazel will move, start, copy, or anything else you’d need them to do. Many customers use it already.

Take a look at Resilio Sync and see how it can work for you or your business. Install it on a Mac mini server hosted in our data center. We can have one ready for you immediately.

Dave,
Probably not what you are hoping to hear, but...
I used one for years, used all the top software packages, usb cables ranging from AQ to Black Cat to the $1K Lightspeed, tried all kinds of tweak from better power supplies, ifi cable splitting filters, decrapifiers, etc. Had Lacie hard drives and tried SS drives too.
The best thing I did was replace the mac with a Sonore microRendu and a NAS. It wasn't even close.
There are plenty of threads that explain the advantages of my solution and plenty of similar approaches. Chris Connaker's online 2part review of the microRendu is a great place to quickly get up the learning curve.
If it's not too late and you aren't emotionally 'all-in', consider it...Cheers,
Spencer
